Lionel Messi left in tears as Argentina loses World Cup final to Spain

Lionel Messi was visibly emotional following Argentina’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, marking another missed opportunity for the Argentine superstar on the global stage, reports BritPanorama.

Despite having scored eight goals in the tournament, Messi was unable to make an impact in the final, failing to register a touch in the Spanish penalty area. This left him without the chance to secure the Golden Boot for the tournament.

Ferran Torres delivered the decisive blow for Spain, scoring the only goal of the match during extra time. Post-match, tensions ran high as several Argentine players engaged in heated confrontations, notably Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart criticized Argentina’s behaviour at the end of the match, describing it as “disgusting.” He noted that Messi stood out for his sportsmanship, having shaken hands with every Spanish player. “The game’s done. They could have absolutely no complaints about what happened today,” Hart stated on the BBC.

Players from the Argentina squad had also displayed contentious behaviour during their semi-final victory over England, further spotlighting their controversial reputation. Wayne Rooney echoed Hart’s sentiments, stating, “It’s just not the reaction you want…” in reference to Argentina’s conduct.

Reacting to altercations, Rooney remarked, “That’s a reaction to them being outplayed, out-fought, out-thought on the football pitch,” underscoring the implications of their frustrations spilling over into unsportsmanlike conduct.

As the dust settles on a disappointing conclusion for Argentina, the emotional and contentious aftermath serves as a reminder of the thin line between passion and hostility in football’s most pressured moments.
