Stamford Bridge will host Champions League football this season — though not with Chelsea taking part. The west London club have confirmed that Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk will use their ground for home fixtures in Europe’s premier club competition during the 2026/27 campaign, reports BritPanorama.

An agreement between the two clubs was finalised this week following discussions that began back in July. Brentford’s Gtech Stadium had also been explored as a potential venue before Stamford Bridge was ultimately selected.

This arrangement marks a significant milestone for the iconic venue in SW6, which has stood witness to two European Cup triumphs. Shakhtar have faced a prolonged absence from their home ground, the Donbas Arena, due to the war in Ukraine that began in 2014, when they were forced to abandon it amid rising conflict.

Over the years, Shakhtar have sought refuge at various stadiums across Europe, including Hamburg and Schalke in Germany, and Wisla Krakow in Poland. Twelve months back, they even played their Europa League qualifying fixtures in Slovenia. Now, with Stamford Bridge, the team finds itself at one of football’s most storied grounds, situated at the heart of London.

Chelsea expressed their support for Shakhtar, stating, “FC Shakhtar have played in countries across Europe and we look forward to welcoming them to London for their Champions League campaign this year.” They assured that efforts will be made to ensure matchdays run “safely and smoothly.”

Shakhtar officials echoed this enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of playing at such a historic venue: “Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in world football, with an incredible history and atmosphere.” They are confident that their matches will evoke memorable experiences for both Ukrainian and English fans.

Shakhtar recently secured their place in the Champions League league phase by clinching the Ukrainian Premier League title last season, finishing twelve points clear of the nearest contender, LNZ Cherkasy. As anticipation builds ahead of the Champions League draw, football fans will be keenly watching which elite teams will travel to London for this distinctive stage of the competition.

This arrangement not only highlights the challenges faced by Shakhtar but also underscores the solidarity shown within the football community in times of crisis. Stamford Bridge’s role in offering a temporary home illustrates the intersection of sport and humanitarian concerns, a reminder of how football remains a unifying force even amidst adversity.
