FIFA imposes penalties on Argentina after World Cup incidents

FIFA has today imposed substantial penalties on the Argentine Football Association following a series of incidents during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, reports BritPanorama.

The governing body has levied a fine of $321,000 — approximately £235,000 — against the AFA, while also mandating that Argentina’s next two home fixtures be played at just half their usual stadium capacity.

The sanctions stem primarily from a politically charged banner brandished by Argentine players following their semi-final triumph over England. Additional charges relate to team misconduct, discrimination, and racist abuse. Of the total financial penalty, $100,000 has been suspended, while a further $100,000 must be directed towards developing an anti-discrimination programme.

One of the two reduced-capacity matches has also been suspended by FIFA. The banner in question bore the slogan “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” — translated as “The Falklands are Argentine” — and was unfurled on the pitch after Lionel Messi inspired a comeback victory against the Three Lions.

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero and ex-Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso were among those spotted parading the provocative display, alongside Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez. The build-up to the semi-final had been heavily coloured by references to the Falklands War, lending the celebration an unmistakably political dimension.

FIFA’s disciplinary framework specifically prohibits the use of sporting events for non-sporting demonstrations. The governing body also cited its regulations concerning discrimination and racist abuse in reaching its verdict against the AFA.

The ugliest consequences, however, were reserved for those involved in a violent altercation that erupted after Spain’s Ferran Torres struck an extra-time winner to claim the final on 19 July in New Jersey. Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment — a ten-match ban and a $90,000 (£65,900) fine — after he was observed seizing Spanish defender Eric Garcia by the throat and subsequently hurling Gavi to the ground.

Nahuel Molina, who appeared to strike Spain’s Rodri as the midfielder celebrated on the pitch, faced a seven-match suspension alongside a $90,000 fine. Thiago Almada escaped with a lighter sanction: a single-match ban and a $30,000 penalty. Notably, Spain’s Gavi was the sole non-Argentine player disciplined, also receiving a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine that sidelines him for September’s Nations League fixture against England at Wembley.

Team official Roberto Ayala, a former Argentina international, also faces disciplinary action, receiving a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine for his involvement in the post-final disorder. The punishments were confirmed on 21 August following a report compiled by a specially appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor, more than a month after the final itself.

All individual suspensions carry over to the next matches played by the sanctioned individuals’ respective teams, with the September international window being the earliest opportunity for enforcement. To place the financial penalties in perspective, Argentina collected $34 million in prize money during the tournament — rendering the combined fines a relatively modest sum for the two-time world champions.

The 2022 holders ultimately fell short in their bid to retain the trophy, defeated by a single Torres goal in extra time. The ramifications of FIFA’s decision will undoubtedly echo in the coming months, not just for Argentina, but also for the intersection of sport and politics on the global stage.
