Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon kills seven

An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon killed seven people and wounded three early Saturday, one of the deadliest attacks since a precarious truce between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect on June 20, reports BritPanorama.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency indicated the airstrike targeted a home on the edge of the village of Ansar, with paramedics still searching through the rubble for survivors.

This escalation follows a “framework agreement” announced on June 26, outlining a plan for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group. The agreement also aims for steps towards an eventual peace accord between the two nations, which remain officially at war nearly 80 years after the creation of Israel.

However, Hezbollah has declined to engage in direct negotiations and was not part of the framework deal. Further intensifying the situation, Israeli airstrikes also struck the strategic Ali Taher hill, which oversees areas around Nabatiyeh and the main transport routes. Notably, despite the ongoing truce, Israeli military operations continue to occur almost daily in this region, which lies north of the Litani River, under Israeli military control.

Since the latest outbreak of hostilities on March 2, triggered by a Hezbollah rocket attack just two days after the U.S. and Israel initiated strikes on Iran, over 4,000 fatalities have been reported due to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians. On the Israeli side, around 40 soldiers along with three civilians—one of whom was a military contractor—have been reported killed.

In a conflict that continues to escalate, the ramifications of these airstrikes will likely deepen the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, already strained by decades of regional instability.
