Polls close in Clacton by-election as Farage faces satirical rival Count Binface

Polls are closing shortly in the Clacton by-election as Nigel Farage aims to retain his seat in a contest marked by significant controversy, reports BritPanorama.

The leader of Reform UK greeted voters with a smile on Thursday morning, appearing confident despite the boycott by nearly all major political parties. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch referred to the election as “fake,” while Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer described it as “a desperate political stunt.” This leaves Count Binface—a satirical figure promising to abolish VAR in football and nationalise Adele—as Farage’s primary challenger.

Thursday’s by-election was called after Mr Farage resigned amid scrutiny regarding his financial dealings. Voters have until 10pm to cast their ballots, with counting scheduled for overnight and results anticipated by Friday morning.

Labour has been gaining momentum over Reform UK in recent polls, amid controversies surrounding Mr Farage’s party, including a £5 million donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and gifts from convicted criminal George Cottrell.

Before stepping down, Mr Farage faced an investigation by parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg over a substantial gift received prior to taking his Commons seat. The inquiry, paused due to his resignation, would recommence should he secure victory in the by-election, with bookmakers indicating strong odds in his favour.

Additionally, Mr Farage could be further scrutinised over support from George Cottrell, who reportedly coordinated staffing for his social media accounts and provided housing benefits. Such issues underscore the complex landscape surrounding this election.

As the count proceeds, the wider implications for party dynamics and public perception are set to emerge, highlighting the unique challenges facing Reform UK and its leader.
