Rory McIlroy praises team after impressive round in BMW Championship

Rory McIlroy has hailed his team after a fantastic opening round in the BMW Championship, shooting a brilliant six-under-par 64 at Bellerive Country Club and taking a joint share of the lead, reports BritPanorama.

The Northern Irishman had struggled the previous week, finishing 66th and failing to break 70 in any of his four rounds. His strong performance in St Louis appears to have reestablished his confidence.

In his post-round comments, McIlroy highlighted the role his team has played in his return to form, noting a bit of “good work” with them has helped align his game. “I felt at least like I got myself back going in the right direction and what I wanted to do with my swing,” he told the Golf Channel.

McIlroy elaborated on the characteristics of Bellerive, stating, “This golf course sets up a lot better for me than Memphis did last week,” citing the wider playing corridors that allow for more forgiveness off the tee. This course configuration has provided him comfort amidst the challenges he faced last week.

As he prepares for the second round, McIlroy remains cautious, saying, “It’s certainly a work in progress. Days like this are encouraging, obviously, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.” He will tee off later today alongside America’s Xander Schauffele.

In contrast, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who won the prior week’s St Jude Championship, struggled significantly, opening with a two-over-par 72 and finishing joint 44th—one shot above the worst score of the opening round. His performance came as a surprise, having not shot over par in his last 18 rounds prior to this tournament, but his approach play and putting proved troublesome.

Meanwhile, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick produced a solid round of five-under-par, just one back from the lead, while his brother, Alex, shot a four-under-par 66. As McIlroy looks to maintain his momentum, the dynamic among the leading players continues to unfold, encapsulating the unpredictable nature of competitive golf.

Ultimately, the opening rounds of the BMW Championship serve as a telling reminder of the delicate balance in sport—where highs are often juxtaposed with unexpected lows, highlighting the unpredictable twists and turns that define the game.
